There are many factors when deciding where to move. Factors like school districts, affordability, or the public transit system, are just several of reasons people decide one house over another. Whether you are renting or buying, when you are looking for a home it is imperative you think about what’s important to you.
What are your top priorities? For many of those living in central Seattle, lifestyle trumps affordability. As city dwellers, these central Seattle residents typically enjoy shorter commute times and a close proximity to public transit. It’s a standard of living that promotes a car-free, walk-centered existence.
Seattle Times journalist Gene Balk recently spoke with Angelique Rosario, a central Seattle dweller. Angelique reported that she loves being so close to the things she wants to do. “I can walk to practically everything — work, groceries, bars, shows, yoga and meditation classes,” Rosario said.
Although her downtown location is close to everything she loves, it is not always the best choice. Living downtown is quite expensive, which is a huge setback. Rosario reports that she spends half her monthly wages on rent alone.
For 60 percent of those who reside in the greater Seattle area, living close to everything is not their main focus. Affordability is the main priority for those looking to buy.
As a renter, Rosario spends half her earnings just keeping a roof over her head. Unfortunately, that’s about all those monthly rent checks do. For renters like Rosario who are spending half their earnings on rent, there’s little wiggle room for emergency expenses or savings. Furthermore, rent checks don’t build equity.
In the end, it all comes back to priorities. What is most important to you? While there’s no right or wrong answer, it’s a rare living situation where you have it all – an affordable home, with a short commute, that’s in a good school district and is close to public transit. Make sure you always put your top priority first.
