What to do First When You Move In

What to do First When You Move In

You just got the keys to your new home. You bought a buffet of Chinese takeout. And, you’re celebrating on the (rather empty) family room floor. Congrats! Three cheers for you.

While you’re probably planning furniture arrangements, take a deep breath and a few steps back. You’ll want to do a few things before you rush headfirst into getting your home primped and ready for company. These tips could save you big.

Change the Locks

You’re planning to get a key made for your mom in case of emergencies. And obviously, you’ll want to have one made for your cleaning lady. You’ve known her for years. But, to how many people did the previous residents also give keys? Change the locks as soon as possible to make sure you, and only you, control who has access.

Snap Photos Like It’s Your Job

While the rooms are still bare, take photos of everything. It’s possible that between the last inspection and when you actually got the keys, something happened. The issue could be as simple as a scratched floor or dinged wall. It doesn’t matter. Document it before you move in. No matter how trustworthy you may be, photos are worth a thousand words when it comes to claiming damage.

Make Sure Your Goods Are Good

Did a moving company help you schlep your big items, such as your refrigerator, washer, and dryer? Plug those babies in as soon as possible to make sure they still function correctly. If an appliance is damaged during the move, you typically have a limited amount of time to report the issue.

Paint First. Organize Second.

If possible, paint before you move in your big furniture. It’s a lot easier to give that puppy a fresh coat when you’re not worried about getting eggshell white on your sofa.

Ask The Neighbors When Trash Day Is

Moving is messy business. The boxes, papers, and stuff pile up quickly. You won’t want to miss a single trash day. So, ask the neighbors. This is also a great way to break the ice and introduce yourself.
