4 Awesome Things You Can Get For Free

4 Awesome Things You Can Get For Free

As a homeowner, there are so many things you need. Why buy them when they’re available for free?

Before you run off to your local home-improvement store to stock up on supplies or your arborist to purchase a new sapling, take a moment. You might just be able to get what you need free of charge.

Many local programs give you access to everything from free tool rentals and trees to complimentary museum tickets and free boat rides. Here are four of our favorites in the Seattle area:

Free Trees

As part of the City of Seattle’s residential tree planting project, Trees for Neighborhoods gives Seattle residents free trees. You can get up to four trees per household. The program gives a variety of small, medium and large trees that are appropriate under power lines, along streets, and in yards. Each tree comes with a watering bag and mulch.

Free Museum Passes

The Museum Pass program is one of the coolest items available to Seattle Public Library cardholders. It allows you to use your card to reserve and print out an admission ticket to participating Seattle museums at no charge. Participating museums include MOHI, EMP, Museum of Flight, Seattle Aquarium, and more.

Free Seeds

Founded by the Lopez Community Land Trust, the Seed Security Initiative and Seed Library allows you to “borrow” seeds. At the beginning of the season, you can take seeds free of change. At the end of the season, after harvesting your plants, you keep some of the seeds and return some for others to use.

Free Sailboat Rides

Every Sunday you can join The Center for Wooden Boats and their volunteer skippers for a sail on Lake Union. Spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Boats generally depart between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM and are “at sea” for roughly 45 minutes.

Have a free thing you love to do in the Seattle area? Drop me a line. I’d love to hear about it.
