Buying or selling a home is one of the most important transactions you will make in your entire life. It’s equally important that you take your time in selecting the real estate agent who will facilitate the process.
Real estate agents are advertised everywhere; yard signs, booths at the local fair, e-mails and online ads, but how can you know which particular smile with a wink is the right person to help you with the process? The key is networking and researching, and not being in a rush. Here are some direct tips to help you choose the right agent.
Get an agent with the right experience
You’ll be better off in almost every case working with a realtor who does this as their full time job. Experience is a plus, but newer agents may have smaller client pools and be able to give you more of their time as well.
Realtors, much like in other industries, have specialties as well. You’ll want to make sure they are properly licensed, and what specialties and trainings they have. For example, if they have SRES after their name listed, they are a specialist for buying and selling for those older than 50.
Interview several agents
Remember, this is someone you will likely have to spend a lot of time with in the coming months. Make sure it is someone who you get along with amicably, and can feel a sense of trust in.
Evaluate their communication skills, and ask how long they’ve been in business and if they can provide references for you to contact. Ask if they have any achievements or awards. Agents who have received peer-nominated awards didn’t win them by accident.
Ask what areas the agent covers
This one is more important than it sounds. You need to get an agent that covers your area, and the kind of residence you’re looking for. Don’t assume that a friend or relative will make the best agent for you. While you may an initial connection and trust with the family member or friend, the most important factor for you is getting the best agent you can to work with you.
